Add a Movie Post

Movies are a big part of Newslines. You can add movie posts for anyone involved in a movie: the actors, the director, the producers, the author or screenwriters. Each post must be written from the perspective of the subject. A post for a director’s Newsline will have a different focus from a post that appears on an actor’s Newsline. The director’s post will focus more on the overall challenge of making the film, while the actor’s post will focus on their role.

In the examples below, Kate Winslet in Titanic is used as an example.

Sources

Do not use IMDB or Wikipedia as sources. Try to use a newspaper or magazine report or interview, or you can link to the movie’s website. It’s best to use an interview as the source. The reason is that you are going to have to find a quote anyway. Most interviews also have some release date information.

Title

The title is always just the name of the movie: Titanic
Capitalize the first letter of all the words.

Category

Movie posts should only have the category of the person the post is about. In this case: Kate Winslet

Body Text

Do

  • Write the summary from the subject’s perspective.
  • Use the subject’s last name only. For all other actors use their full name. If you have to mention an actor twice use their last name the second time.
  • Add the director’s name.
  • Add the name of the author. If the book has a different title to the movie add that too.
  • Add co-stars. If the actor plays the sole lead, add other stars in the co-stars section. If the character has a strong co-lead, like in the case of Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic, then you can add the other actor in the body text.

Don’t

  • Do not repeat the movie name in the body text unless you have to for some reason (title is the name of a character, for example).
  • Do not write it like a trailer. Just write a factual account of the plot in a few sentences.
  • Don’t overwrite. Just write a summary in a few sentences. We don’t need to know every detail of the plot.
  • Do not ask questions: Will their love survive the sinking of the ship?
  • Do not add box office numbers or any reviews. We’re going to add them in automatically later.
  • Do not plagiarize other summaries. Write your own!

The text should look like this:

When she is rescued from a suicide attempt by Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), they embark on a love affair which is interrupted when the ship hits an iceberg. Co-starring Billy Zane, Cathy Bates, Bill Paxton and David Warner.

Like all Newslines posts you should link to the source from the verb, in this case the word plays.

Genres

Drama, Comedy, Thriller, Historical Drama, Biopic, Musical, Animated comedy, Western. Feel free to mix and match the descriptions. We could describe Titanic as a historical drama, a drama, a love story, or as a disaster film.

Quotes

Quotes must be by the subject or by someone talking about the subject who was involved in the production. Do not use dialog from the film. Do not use reviews. Quotes can be from newspaper or magazine interviews, and video appearances. in this case, the quote is from this video.

When asked what attracted her to the role:
Her strength, her determination, her inner passion. Things that I always relate to. I think it’s something that I have in me.

Note that you do not always need to explain the quote:

[Rose appealed to me] because of her strength, her determination, her inner passion. Things that I always relate to. I think it’s something that I have in me.

You also do not need to say “Winslet:” before the quote because we know the post is about her. However, if it is someone else speaking about Winslet we should use their name:

Cameron:

Kate was perfect for the role. She brought life to Rose and really carried the film. (That’s a made-up quote).

YouTube link

The YouTube can be one of the following:

  1. A trailer for the movie. This works best for big stars who appear in the trailer.
Note that you should try to use the trailer provided by the film company as they are usually the best quality. Check the name of the uploader.
  2. A clip of the actor from the movie. This works better for less well-known stars who may not appear in the trailer.
  3. An interview with the actor talking about the role.
